Bringing you the latest in injury care and performance improvement

Our Practice

Kinetic Health is conveniently located in Northwest Calgary within the community of Edgemont. Dr. Abelson, the clinical director of Kinetic Health, has been practicing at this location for the past 18 years.  Kinetic Health specializes in treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions and in improving sports performance.

The majority of our patients hear about Kinetic Health through referrals by their family physician or from other patients who obtained resolution of a previous injury with the help of our practitioners. Kinetic Health also accepts patients – without the need for referral.

When considering Kinetic Health as your facility of choice we would like you to bear in mind the following:

  • Our impressive track record. The practitioners at Kinetic Health have a success rate of resolving 90% of their patient’s musculoskeletal injuries.
  • The majority of our patients find that their soft-tissue injuries are resolved within just 2-to-3 weeks of treatment.
  • After the initial assessment, we give each of our patients a detailed summation of our examination findings. This assessment contains a working diagnosis, therapy, exercise recommendations, as well a specific time-period or date when a re-evaluation will be performed.
  • One the primary reasons for our high success rate is the integrated approach we use. We have learned that we can achieve the most optimum results by combining Soft-Tissue Techniques ( Active Release Graston, Acupuncture) with Manipulation and appropriate Exercise.
  • At all times, our primary objective is to resolve your condition.

Come and enjoy the ambiance of our relaxing front office. Drink some herbal tea as you wait for your appointment, and enjoy the beautiful art from around the world. Our Services

Our practitioners offer a broad range of expert services to help you heal and recover from your injuries.  Click on each of the following tabs for a brief introduction about each of these services.

We offer the following services at Kinetic Health:

Active Release Techniques (ART)

Active Release Techniques (ART) has become one of most sought after soft-tissue treatments in the world today. ART is often your best bet in resolving a chronic soft-tissue injury, especially when ART is combined with functional exercise programs..

ART is one of the most effective forms of treatment for a wide variety of soft-tissue and repetitive-motion injuries. ART can aid in the rapid recovery from a broad range of soft-tissue injuries.

ART is widely used by industry professionals suffering from cumulative injury traumas, as well as athletes (both professional and week-end warriors) who have suffered from a sports-related injury. For example, ART has helped Olympic athletes from many countries achieve up to gold medal status.

At Kinetic health we provide a very high standard of care with Active Release Techniques.

Dr. Abelson is a fully certified provider of ART, and an instructor of ART. In addition Dr. Abelson is a contributing author of the ART Online Biomechanics Manual – which is used by ART to train other physicians in biomechanical analysis and ART. He is also the co-author of the only book about ART which has been written for the general public.

Our Background in Active Release Techniques

Dr. Abelson served as an instructor in Active Release Techniques for over 10 years. He was also involvement in helping to write the ART Biomechanics Manual which is currently used to train other ART practitioners in motion assessment.

Dr. Abelson is also the internationally best-selling author of “Release Your Pain – Using Active Release Techniques to Resolve Soft Tissue Injuries”, as well as several other books.

This was the first book written for the general public about Active Release Techniques.  The second edition of “Release Your Pain” was just published in 2012 by Rowan Tree Books.  Please visit www.releaseyourbody.com for more information.

Both Dr. Abelson and Dr. Mylonas are fully trained and certified in all the ART courses. They bring years of experience in the successful treatment and resolution soft-tissue conditions by combining Active Release Techniques with Functional Exercise.

Using Chiropractic Manipulation

Chiropractic manipulation is an integral aspect of our treatment protocols.  Joint restrictions are often a critical aspect of the problems that need to be addressed in order to obtain a full resolution of a musculoskeletal condition. At Kinetic Health, we integrate both spinal manipulation and extremity manipulation into our treatment protocols.

At Kinetic Health, we approach Chiropractic Care from a neuro/biomechanical approach that is strongly supported by the latest scientific studies. We use Chiropractic manipulation to treat musculosketetal conditions, relieve pain, improve function by restoring freedom of motion, and improve nervous system function by manipulating both the spinal column and the body’s extremities. At Kinetic Health, we use treatment methods that combine osseous manipulation (hands-on adjustments) with soft-tissue techniques (Active Release Technique, Graston Technique). These treatments are supplemented by specific rehabilitation exercises that strengthen weakened muscle groups, improve flexibility, and assist in preventing conditions from returning.

Understanding what Manipulation is all about

After being in practice for the last 20 years, I am still asked two common questions about Chiropractic Manipulation: What is the purpose of an adjustment? and Is an adjustment really necessary?

At a basic level, the answer to these questions is quite simple. The purpose of an adjustment is to restore both normal motion and neurological function. The process of an adjustment literally breaks up restrictions between joints, allowing for normal range-of-motion. Obtaining a normal range-of-motion, without multiple biomechanical compensations, is significant. By returning the body to its normal motion patterns, we are able to remove a tremendous strain on our nervous system, which until then, had to send constant signals to compensate and correct for these restrictions.

Are adjustments necessary…quite simply…the answer is Yes. If you have a joint restriction it needs to be address for a full resolution of your condition. It is as important as removing and releasing the scar tissue between soft-tissue layers. Both aspects need to be addressed in order to obtain a full resolution of your condition.

 Using Graston Techniques

Graston Techniques is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The Graston Technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. This technique was was originally developed by athletes.

We have found that the Graston Technique is very effective when used in conjunction with Active Release Techniques.  Graston Technique acts to increase circulation to the affected area by causing a low-level inflammatory response.  This low level inflammation re-initiates the healing process, essentially kick-starting your body to lay down new tissue to promote healing.

Using Biomechanical Analysis

Essentially, Biomechanical Analysis involves having the patient perform numerous tests that allow the practitioner to determine exactly which structures in your body are causing, or perpetuating, your injuries. We use Biomechanical Analysis to determine the extent to which your body’s kinetic chain is involved.

Our bodies are a remarkable series of kinetically linked systems which, when working efficiently, stores and releases impressive amounts of energy when we need it! This is what we refer to as our kinetic chain. Each kinetic chain is made up of individual links (your joints, bones, and soft tissues) which are connected to each other to form a Kinetic Web.

Any weak link in this chain not only generates its own set of problems, but also creates problems and compensations within its entire Kinetic Web.

These videos provides an example of the type of biomechanical tests we use at Kinetic Help. These are tests are performed in combination with the standard orthopedic and neurological test that we use to rule out pathology.

Nutritional Counseling

Eating the right foods for your body can help to heal your body and keep you strong. Imbalanced dietary habits contribute to your body’s susceptibility to inflammation.

Inflammation is now thought to play a role in pathological conditions ranging from anemia and allergy to coronary heart disease, diabetes, dementia, psoriasis and even stroke. From inflamed gums that may contribute to cardiovascular disease, to playing a crucial role in fanning the flames of cancer cell growth, inflammation has been implicated in many more diseases than was previously believed.

Fifty million Americans suffer form chronic, daily pain; much of this can be related to inflammation. Those who suffer from chronic, daily pain have a significant increased risk of dying from cancer. The problem is that with most pharmacological measures to inhibit inflammation (Arachodonic cascades to PGE2) there are serious side effects. Side effects such as GI bleeds, liver damage, kidney damage, and a wide variety of other serious effects.

At Kinetic Health we offer Nutritional Counseling to help you meet your body’s nutritional requirements.
